IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum)

The IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) complements the IPC J-STD-001 – Requirements for Soldering Electronic and Electrical Assemblies.

IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) – Requirements for Soldering Electrical and Electronic Assemblies

The IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) describes the methods for ensuring your assembly is of the highest possible class each time.

The IPC -STD-001 (Space Addendum) fully complements the Class 3 workings of the IPC J-STD-001 for aeronautical applications.

Who should undertake IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) Training?

This standard is aimed at anyone needing to understand whether a soldered joint is acceptable, such as:

  • process engineers
  • assembly operators
  • quality and inspection staff
  • anyone responsible for the quality and reliability of soldered assemblies
  • anyone working with IPC J-STD-001 to a Class 3 level

IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) for trainers or staff

There are two levels of IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) training.

To have your team able to apply the standard you need the Application Specialist (CIS) level.
To take responsibility for your own training at least one of your team must gain the Certified IPC Trainer (CIT) level to train and certify other staff. Any company with a large number of staff who will benefit from IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) knowledge and certification may find it more beneficial to have a certified trainer to train and maintain its own employees.

IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) course overview

The course describes the materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high quality soldered joints; it emphasises the importance of process control. The basic techniques of soldering are explained along with details on relevant factors such as flux, solder composition, soldering to terminals, through-hole, surface-mount devices and relevant inspection. Acceptance criteria are also fully covered. Importantly, this is not a beginner’s soldering course and candidates must have hand soldering experience. The course includes practical elements including work on plated through hole components and surface mount devices to validate inspection to the IPC J-STD-001 (Space Addendum).

J-STD-001 (Space Addendum) covers only one class of quality assurance:

  • Class 3

High reliability/critical products – such as military, aeronautical and medical. Not only is the product lifetime extended but the products must function without interruption and downtime is not an acceptable option.

IPC J-STD-001 course duration and booking

This course for both Trainers and Application Specialists is 1 day.

IPC training programmes are intensive courses including examinations. Students should have the necessary standard of knowledge and experience to support their attendance on a course and to undertake the examination. If students have any concerns about qualification to attend any course they should contact The Electronics Group’s training staff in advance for advice.
