Introduction to Soldering Surface Mount Devices – 1 Day Course

Course overview:

Moving from conventional through-hole soldering to working with surface mount components can be a daunting change. New techniques are required, and new skills must be mastered. This Introduction to Surface Mount Soldering course will teach new people to industry or experienced staff the skills required to soldering these components onto PCBs.  

This course will raise the confidence of attendees with the aim of helping businesses ensure a basic level of skill across the team and ensuring costly errors and mistakes are avoided.  

This course has been developed by The Electronics Group in line with IPC standards. However, this course is not accredited, delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance. 

What is covered in the Introduction to Surface Mount Soldering course? 

  • Electrostatic safety and procedures 
  • Health & Safety in the workshop 
  • Introduction to commonly used Surface Mount Devices (SMDs) 
  • Correct use of tools and equipment 
  • Fundamentals of Surface Mount Soldering 
  • Fitting surface mount components to printed circuit boards (PCBs)
     

Who is the Introduction to Surface Mount Soldering course suitable for? 

This course is suitable for a range of delegates, from those at the start of their career in electronics manufacturing, to those who may have been in the industry for a while and need to refresh their knowledge or improve their technique. 

This course leads on to the Advanced Surface Mount Hand Soldering including Rework course and is also a good prerequisite for the IPC J STD 001 course. 

What is included in the Introduction to Surface Mount Soldering course? 

This course is a mixture of classroom learning and practical. We provide all students with the necessary tooling and equipment required to complete the course. On completion of the course delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance. All delegates attending one of our training centres will be provided with lunch and refreshments. 

Where can I take the Introduction to Surface Mount Soldering course? 

We offer this course at the following locations: 

  • EGL North – Leeds 
  • EGL South – Chippenham 
  • At your facility* 

*training at your facility will require sole use of a suitable workshop environment.
