Advanced Through-Hole Hand Soldering (including reworking techniques) – 2 Day Course

Over two days, either consecutively or separately, this more advanced soldering course will develop the skills and understanding pinned down in The Electronics Group’s Introduction to Through-Hole Hand Soldering course. The course teaches the knowledge and skills to carry out hand forming, cutting and hand soldering on a variety of PCB finishes, and also includes reworking techniques. An important feature is that it enables staff to recognise and rework faults arising from the standard assembly soldering process.

Course overview

The course, which follows on from our Introduction to Through-Hole Hand Soldering Course, provides the knowledge and skills to carry out hand-soldering processes as well as enabling staff to recognise and rework any soldering faults relating to the standard assembly soldering process. The knowledge gained is, essentially, understanding and applying soldering techniques, recognition of soldering faults, the ability to rectify them and a thorough understanding of the quality of finished product. Component reworking is also a key feature of the course.

The regular techniques of soldering are explained, along with the need for, and application of, flux. Typical faults are identified and methods of rectifying them are explained. Types of PCB finishes are discussed and used on the practical element of the course, whilst different types of soldering irons and stations are also covered. All of this detail ensures that each student receives a broad range of experiences.

Subjects covered and Student assessment

Subjects covered include:

Day 1

•    Soldering skills and workshop practice
•    Soldering irons and methods
•    Solder composition types and fluxes
•    Electrostatic discharge
•    PCB Types and Construction

Day 2

•    Component reworking theory
•    Practical reworking skills and techniques
•    Vacuum de-soldering, de-solder pumps and solder wick

Students attending Day 1 only will be awarded The Electronics Group’s Certificate of Attendance.
Those also attending Day 2 will receive The Electronics Group’s Soldering Course Certificate upon satisfactory completion of an examination, as well as having the opportunity to take an IPC course of study and receive the IPC Hand Soldering for Through-Hole Components DVD-42/43C certificate – an industry-recognised hand soldering certification for operators and assembly technicians. The IPC programme is divided into five sections: Preparation; Materials; Soldering; Cleaning; and Workmanship Standards; and includes pretesting, section review questions, and a final certification test to ensure that participants understand and retain the required background knowledge for hands-on training.

Who should attend?

Those with sound basic soldering skills involved in electronics manufacture looking to develop their skills to a more advanced level will benefit from attending either one or both days. The Electronics Group’s Introduction to Through-Hole Hand Soldering course will provide a useful introduction to this study.

What is included?

All course materials are included together with a light lunch and all refreshments during the day.
