What is the IPC 6012 – Qualification and Performance Specification for Rigid Printed Boards?
IPC 6012 defines the qualification and performance requirements for rigid printed circuit boards, including single and double sided, multilayer, metal-core, and blind/buried-via constructions. The course covers key acceptance criteria and quality requirements for conductors, plating, holes and vias, testing, and electrical, mechanical and environmental performance.
What is covered in the IPC 6012 Standard/Training Course?
Topics covered in the IPC 6012 standard include:
- Scope, terminology and supporting IPC documentation
- PCB performance classes and board types
- Material and surface-finish requirements
- Visual inspection and acceptance criteria
- Dimensional and conductor requirements
- Plated holes, vias and microvias
- Structural integrity and microsection evaluation
- Solder mask, cleanliness and electrical requirements
- Mechanical and environmental performance
- Special requirements and reliability considerations
- Acceptance testing and quality-assurance provisions
Who is the IPC 6012 Training Course suitable for?
IPC 6012 training is ideal for professionals involved in the design, manufacture, inspection or quality assurance of rigid printed circuit boards. It provides a clear understanding of the standard’s qualification and performance requirements, helping participants assess compliance, improve manufacturing quality and communicate acceptance criteria confidently across design, production and customer teams. The IPC 6012 certification highlights the acceptance criteria for all three classes of product: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3.
IPC 6012 training is currently available at the following levels:
- Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) and is suitable for Goods In Inspectors, PCB Inspectors, PCB Manufacturing Operatives, Quality Control
CSE and CIT level certification will be available at a future date.
Which level is suitable for your business depends on the goals for the training and The Electronics Group is happy to help guide you through this decision process.
All IPC certificates are valid for two years and recertification criteria found in the Policies and Procedures apply for CSE’s and CIT’s.
How long is the IPC 6012 Training Course and how is it delivered?
The IPC 6012 course is delivered over three days. This course can be delivered remotely via Teams/Zoom, at our training centres or on your site.
What do I need for the IPC 6012 course?
- A copy of the latest IPC 6012 standard
- A copy of the relevant IPC Policies and Procedures
- A laptop or computer for exams
We can provide these items on loan should you not have your own or wish to purchase a copy of the book, however, having a copy of the standard available to trained IPC staff is beneficial in their day-to-day work. These items are required for all delivery methods, levels and locations.
If you are taking a remote course, you will need to ensure that your IT equipment meets certain specifications. Details on this can be found here.
Training at your facility will require a suitable classroom environment with a HDMI compatible TV or Projector.
Are there any prerequisites to studying for the IPC 6012 course?
Whilst there are no prerequisites for enrolling on the course, we do recommend delegates have basic knowledge of rigid circuit boards. PCB manufacturing terminology and processes would be advantageous.
