At The Electronics Group not only are we the UK’s largest independent IPC training provider but we also have an extensive range of Electronics Skills Courses. These range from Electronics Fault Finding to Through-Hole and Surface Mount Soldering and more!

We have both beginner courses and advanced courses for seasoned professionals looking to further enhance their skills.

You can see all available course dates on our course calendar.

In this article we will introduce you to our range of Electronics Skills Courses to help you find the right course for you.

Electronics Skills Courses – Fundamentals:

Introduction to Electronics Fault Finding

Electronics is all about problem-solving. When you join our Introduction to Electronics Fault Finding course, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the common issues that occur in electronic assemblies and how to diagnose them effectively.

The course starts with teaching the basics of component identification and electrical safety, then moves to more complex systems and the use of fault-finding tools, ensuring you know how to pinpoint and resolve issues quickly.

The Introduction to Electronics Fault Finding is a 5 day comprehensive course and you can read more about some of the fault finding techniques covered in this article.

Understanding the Dangers of ESD/EOS

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical overstress (EOS) are critical concerns in electronics that can lead to significant damage if not properly managed. Our course on this topic educates you on the necessary precautions and procedures to protect sensitive electronic components. You’ll learn about the theories behind ESD and EOS, and more importantly, the practical steps to mitigate these risks.

This course also includes a module on creating safe work environments to prevent ESD/EOS incidents. By understanding and implementing these safety standards, you enhance not only your skillset but also your value as a professional in the electronics industry.

A significant portion of the course is dedicated to hands-on practice with tools and equipment. This practical approach ensures that when faced with ESD/EOS in the real world, you’re well-prepared to handle it effectively.

Electronics Skills Courses – Soldering:

Introduction to Through-Hole Soldering

Through-hole soldering is a fundamental skill in electronics, crucial for both construction and repairs. Our introductory course provides a step-by-step guide to mastering this technique. Starting with the basics of soldering materials and tools, you’ll quickly move to hands-on exercises that teach you to solder with confidence and precision.

The course is structured to give you a firm foundation in traditional through-hole soldering techniques while emphasising quality and safety. The focus on thorough practice ensures that you leave the course ready to apply your skills in a variety of settings.

See more details on our Introduction to Through-Hole Soldering course here.

Advanced Through-Hole Soldering Including Rework

Building on the basics, our Advanced Through-Hole Soldering 2 day course dives into complex soldering challenges, including rework and repair. This course is tailored for those who already have a foundation in soldering but want to elevate their skill set to tackle more intricate work.

The Advanced Through-Hole Soldering course focuses on effectively applying soldering techniques, recognising soldering faults and how to rectify them. As well as having a thorough understanding of the quality of the finished product. Techniques for reworking existing solder joints and repairing complex electronic assemblies are covered in detail.

Hands-on sessions dominate the course schedule, where you will take part in reworking actual electronic devices. This real-world practice ensures that your skills are not just theoretical but immediately applicable in your daily work.

Introduction to Surface Mount Soldering

Surface mount technology (SMT) represents a significant portion of modern electronic assemblies. Our 1-day Introduction to Surface Mount Soldering course equips you with the skills needed to handle these components. The course covers different types of SMT components, tools, and techniques essential for high quality surface mount soldering.

You will learn about the delicate nature of SMT components, and the precision required to solder them correctly. The course includes practice sessions using the latest soldering stations and equipment, supervised by our expert trainers.

Advanced Surface Mount Soldering Including Rework

For professionals aiming to specialise in surface mount technology, our Advanced Surface Mount Soldering 2-day course is ideal. This course explores a range of techniques and challenges specific to SMT. As well as the techniques to reworking and repairing surface mount components.

You will learn about a variety of solder compositions to ensure you have first-hand knowledge of the qualities and attributes of different types of solder. The course also covers techniques for the safe removal of misaligned components, board preparation and adding replacement devices.

This course is a great prerequisite to the IPC J STD 001 and IPC 7711/7721 courses.

Introduction to Soldering and Mounting BGAs and QFNs

BGAs (ball grid array component) and QFNs (quad flat no lead component) are commonplace in modern electronic devices, requiring specific skills to solder and mount correctly. Our course introduces these skills, focusing on the techniques necessary to handle these delicate components without causing damage.

The course walks you through the process from start to finish. From preparing the board, positioning the components to the soldering itself. You’ll also learn about inspection techniques to ensure a quality connection.

Due to the practical nature of this course, and the specific equipment required, this can only be done at our Leeds Training Centre. The combination of theory and practice on this course will prepare you to work with some of the most advanced components in electronics today.

Electronics Skills Courses – Cable and Wire Harnessing:

Cable, Wire Terminations and Harness Assembly Practical Skills

Our course in Cable and Wire Harness Assembly covers the complex aspects of cable and harness construction. This course is similar to the IPC WHMA A 620 hands on Addendum. However, the content differs slightly, and we deliver the course at a slower pace over 2 days.

During the course you’ll learn about the different techniques such as crimping, cable wrapping, loom installation and splicing. The course also covers topics such as health and safety in the workshop and the correct equipment and tools to use to ensure your assemblies meet all required standards.

Practical exercises are central to the course, allowing you to apply what you’ve learned and practice your technique. This hands-on approach is supported by comprehensive theoretical learning, giving you a well-rounded understanding of advanced cable and wire harness assembly.
