What is the IPC CID – Certified Interconnect Designer course?
The IPC CID (Certified Interconnect Designer) is the industry’s premier PCB design certification. Developed by IPC, this globally recognised standards is designed for professionals involved in printed circuit board (PCB) design.
CID focuses on how to take an electronic circuit and transform it into a reliable, manufacturable PCB layout that meets industry standards. The course is based on real-world applications and provides delegates with the knowledge needed to improve design quality, reduce errors, and work confidently with suppliers and manufacturing partners.
What is covered in the IPC CID course?
Topics included in the IPC CID course include:
Key PCB Design Factors
Introductions to different types of components
- Best practices for PCB layouts
Addressing issues with components and assemblies
- Characteristics of printed boards
PCB surface finishes
Documentation of PCB design
High current and voltage design considerations
Reliability and testing
The training is designed to improve understanding of how design decisions affect the entire product lifecycle—from layout to final product.
Who is the IPC CID course suitable for?
The IPC CID course is ideal for organisations and individuals working in or alongside PCB design.
At a company level, it is suited to:
- OEMs and CEMs involved in PCB development and production
- Engineering and design teams working on electronic products
- Quality and manufacturing departments supporting product development
At an individual level, the course is suitable for:
- PCB designers
- Electrical or mechanical engineers
- Manufacturing and test engineers
- Parts and procurement engineers
The certification demonstrates a strong working knowledge of PCB design and helps align team members with IPC standards for consistent, high-quality output.
Is IPC CID training available at different levels?
Unlike many IPC standards, the IPC CID course is only available at one level:
- Certified Interconnect Designer (CID) – Suitable for beginners.
However, those wishing to further their design skills can enrol on the CID+
- Advanced Certified Interconnect Designer (CID+) – For those who have already achieved CID and wish to deepen their knowledge. COMING SOON!
This course does not follow the CIS, CSE, and CIT structure used by other IPC standards.
If you’re unsure which level is right for you or your team, we happy to advise.
All IPC CID certifications are valid for life.
How long is the IPC CID course and how is it delivered?
- Certified Interconnect Designer (CID): 3 days
The course is delivered at both our training centres in Leeds and Cirencester. It can also be attended remotely via Team.
The first course scheduled for 1st – 3rd September 2025.
