What is the IPC CID+ (Certified Interconnect Designer Advanced) course?
The IPC CID+ (Certified Interconnect Designer Advanced) course is an advanced certification developed for experienced PCB design professionals who want to build on their existing knowledge. It focuses on complex design principles, including high-speed design, signal integrity, power distribution and thermal management.
This course follows on from the IPC CID course and goes deeper into the challenges of designing multilayer and high-density PCBs for demanding applications. It is recognised worldwide and helps demonstrate your advanced competence in PCB layout, performance and manufacturability.
What is covered in the IPC CID+ course?
The course provides advanced-level content covering a wide range of topics, including:
- High-speed design and signal integrity
- Power distribution and thermal management
- Advanced component placement and routing strategies
- Design for manufacturing, test and reliability in complex boards
- Use of blind/buried vias, microvias and HDI techniques
- Controlled impedance and stack-up design
- Advanced material selection and cost-performance trade-offs
- Review and critique of real-world PCB design examples
You’ll take part in structured learning with the opportunity to apply your knowledge in practical design exercises. The course ends with an open book examination consisting of 100+ multiple choice questions.
Who is the IPC CID+ course suitable for?
The IPC CID+ is aimed at individuals who have already achieved the IPC CID certification or have significant experience in PCB design. It’s particularly valuable for:
- Senior PCB designers
- Design engineers and layout professionals
- Product development engineers
- Technical leads or team leaders in electronics development
- Anyone involved in high-reliability or complex product design (e.g. aerospace, automotive, medical, defence)
It’s also well suited to those looking to formalise their advanced design knowledge with a globally recognised certification.
Is IPC CID+ training available at different levels?
The IPC CID+ is a single advanced-level certification designed to build on the knowledge gained in the IPC CID course. It assumes a solid understanding of PCB design fundamentals and focuses on more complex principles and best practices.
Unlike many IPC standards, the IPC CID and IPC CID+ courses are available at two levels only:
- Certified Interconnect Designer (CID) – for professionals with at least 2 years’ experience in PCB design
- Advanced Certified Interconnect Designer (CID+) – for those who have already achieved CID and wish to deepen their knowledge
This course does not follow the CIS, CSE, and CIT structure used by other IPC standards.

How long is the IPC CID+ course and how is it delivered?
- Certified Interconnect Designer Advanced (CID+): 3 days

To complete the IPC CID+ course, you will need:
- A copy of the latest IPC CID+ course materials (provided as part of your booking)
- A laptop or computer for accessing course content and taking the exam
Included in the cost of your course are copies of the standards needed for the course. These are sent out in advance and should be brought with you when you attend the training.
Are there any prerequisites to studying for the IPC CID+ course?
While there are no requirements to join the IPC CID+ course, If you haven’t completed the CID yet, we recommend starting there before progressing to CID+.
